NAMA Foray 2003: Québec

The 2003 NAMA's foray will be held at Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, in the Belle Province of Québec, from August 29th to September 1st. The meeting will be organized by the Cercle des mycologues de Montréal and the Cercle des mycologues de Québec. The foray will coincide with the Association de mycologie du Québec's annual meeting which gathers six Québec mycological groups.

From an ecological point of view, the chosen area holds a special interest considering it is at the junction of the Canadian Shield, the Appalachian Mountains and the St-Lawrence Plain. A great diversity of mushroom picking sites are found all around this area.

Notre-Dame-de-Foy's college campus offers all facilities for such an event. The organization of the activities is based on the format that has been successfully experimented at Duchesnay, in 1998, during the NorthEast Mycological Federation (NEMF)'s foray. Participants will be offered a choice of many activities. Among other things, bilingual excursions (about twenty are already organized), conferences and workshops, in French or English or in both languages. The utmost efforts have been made to surprise participants with astonishing aspects of mycology, such as the use of living mushrooms in art.

Directions to the Foray

By car, foray's site is less then half an hour to the south of the historical city of (Québec) You will find that Québec city, America's most European city, is worth the journey by itself. The foray will be held at the Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy:

Saint-Augustin de DesMaures, QC, G3A 1B3

Note: Be careful; there is also in the vicinity another place called Saint-Augustin sur mer, and another called Lac Saint-Augustin...all within minutes of each others.

The distances from Montreal Airport (Dorval) to Québec city is about 200km (driving time 2 hours 15 minutes) along the north shore of the St-Lawrence River. Driving time is much more on the south shore.

Saint-Augustin de DesMaures is 12 km (driving time 10 minutes) to the southwest of Québec Airport. There is no bus to the Campus from Québec, but a taxi from the Québec Airport to the Campus should cost less than $20.

Concerning the directions to the site, Mapquest is reliable; it is helpful to know the zip code: G3A 1B3 for the Campus and use QC as the abbreviation for the province of Québec at the appropriate spot. This will produce several maps with zoom in or zoom out functions as well as road directions. The sponsoring club's website (www.mycomontreal.qc.ca) will also contain detailed directions and maps by the end of March.
