SUMMARY:AMS Webinar: Mycorrhizal Fungi: Diversity\, Function and Mysteries of the Underground
DESCRIPTION:Alberta Mycological Society presents webinar “Mycorrhizal Fungi: Diversity\, Function and Mysteries of the Underground” by Jacob Beauregard\, PhD (University of Alberta). \nMycorrhizal fungi are globally distributed plant symbionts. While multiple groups of mycorrhizal fungi exist\, they share the fact that they form intimate relationships with plants – from the arctic to the tropics. However\, mycorrhizal fungi  span an incredible diversity of species and functional traits\, not only within groups but between them. Whether with grasses\, orchids\, or your favourite tree\, they are playing important roles right beneath your feet! Many questions remain in regard to their impacts on soil ecosystems\, the other microbes that live with them\, and how they play into making plants more resilient to changing environments. Join us in exploring who they are\, what they do\, and everything we don’t yet understand about them! \nJacob is a PhD student at the UofA in the mycorrhizal ecology lab of Dr. Justine Karst. While he is from Vancouver\, BC\, he recently moved to Alberta from Quebec and has a background in forest conservation\, management and microbial ecology. Jacob fell in love with fungi and never turned back – from mushrooms to molds\, he leads a mycocentric life and is on a mission to bring fungi to the forefront. He believes that fungi are for everyone from everywhere and that we just need to get their stories out there! While fanciful fungal stories do exist\, he believes they are wild and mysterious enough without the need for embellishment. He likes to live by the mantra – less hype\, more hyphae and hopes you’ll be equally inspired by the many mycological mysteries already out there!

SUMMARY:NAMA New England
DESCRIPTION:NAMA New England – Annual Foray\n\n\n\n\nPotash Hill\, Marlboro VT\, September 11-14\, 2025\n\n\nNAMA’s 2025 Annual Foray will convene at Potash Hill\, a repurposed former college campus\, near Marlboro\, Vermont\, September 11 to 14\, 2025! \nThe lush campus and grounds of Potash Hill feature a variety of housing and community-space options more than ample for our Annual Foray needs as well as hundreds of acres of lush woodland renowned for fungal bounty. Situated in the southern Vermont between Brattleboro and Wilmington\, the facility is encompassed by a 560-acre property with early 19th century farm houses\, arts and academic buildings\, expansive views and undeveloped forests with an extensive network of trails. Hartford’s Bradley Airport is located about 90 minutes away and Boston’s Logan Airport is 2.5 hours’ drive. There is also daily train service to Brattleboro from East Coast cities. \nMost of the cleared areas and buildings on the central campus are contained within approximately 65 acres. The rest of the campus is primarily undeveloped forest\, which Potash Hill’s management is committed to preserving. \nThe NAMA Foray Committee team can’t wait to build another Field of [Fungal] Dreams for your foraying pleasure and we hope to see you there! \nKen Beugeleisen\, Foray Committee Chair

SUMMARY:NAMA_MX25: Journey to Ixtlan
DESCRIPTION:OAXACA!! The Third Regional Foray in Mexico with the Fungivore!\n\nIf you are anywhere near the orbit of anyone who took the leap to attend this first or second NAMA Mycological Forays in Mexico in 2023 and 2024\, you know\, because they haven’t shut up about it. What started out as a tantalizing idea in early 2022 became a pivotal and ground-breaking interconnection between mycologists in Mexico and the United States; long-time coming connections between the indigenous communities of Mexico State\, attendees and visiting chefs… connections that will last a lifetime! After two runs at the incredible Hotel Rodavento in Valle de Bravo\, we felt it was time to expand the range of NAMA programs to beating heart of ancient and modern Mexican mycological history: Oaxaca. \nWe shoot to pierce even deeper into the endless font of wisdom and knowledge that Mexico represents: This time\, in Book 3–sorry our third year–of our NAMA_MX Saga\, we take our Journey to Ixtlán.  Ixtlán de Juraez is the largest community within the Zapotec speaking Sierra Juarez\, part of the Sierra Norte mountain range of Southern\, Mexico in the state of Oaxaca\, comprising about 2500 people. Through collective community action\, they have created amazing infrastructure at their EcoturIxtlan adventure camp\, for lack of a better word: complete with conference center\, hikes\, natural beauty\, restaurant on-site\, temescal\, and wood-fire heated cabins for about 65 people to stay comfortably\, this mixed pine forest hideaway is a biodiversity playground… and literal playground! Oaxaca has been in the consciousness of the mycological world since the 1956 LIFE magazine featured a Oaxacan ‘shaman’ Maria Sabina and blew the lid off of “magic mushrooms.” Yes\, that was the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca! \nThe Fungivore has been operating in Oaxaca since 2019\, and in Ixtlan de Juarez since September of 2021\, our inaugural adventure with native guide Celestino Mendez. We are so excited to share this very special location with NAMA and the rest of North America. \n\n\nKey Trip Details\n\nLength: 6 nights\nAverage Foray Distance: 2 miles/day\nAltitude: 7\,000-9\,000 feet\nExertion Level: Easy to Moderate\nAccommodations:\n– 2 Nights in Oaxaca City\n– 4 Nights at EcoturIxtlan Cabañas\nAll meals included: 6 Dinners; 5 Breakfasts; 5 Lunches)\nAmenities: Incredible fungi-rich 40 acres of rustic accommodations & foraging grounds; optional temescal\, on-site restaurant\, fast wifi.\nCost: $2525.00***\n\n***EARLY BIRDS GET A $225 DISCOUNT if you register before 2/25/2025!***\nApply & Join Today >

SUMMARY:Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival has become one of the best mushroom events in the Pacific Northwest\, and now is the time to make your plans to come to Brookings\, Oregon\, the weekend of November 9-10\, 2024 for this very popular festival. \nThe festival is being held this year at Chetco Brewing Company (830 Railroad Street in downtown Brookings) and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $5.00 for adults and covers one or both days; once you’ve paid\, your colored wristband is all you need to show to come and go from the main hall during the festival. (Kids 12 and under are free to attend\, as long as they’re with a paying adult; of course\, they’ll get a different colored wristband.) Please note that service dogs are welcome at the Festival\, but you need to leave your sweet and cuddly non-service dogs at home\, as they’re a liability for Chetco Brewing Company and the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival. (Thanks in advance for your understanding.) \nOne of the highlights of the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival is our huge display\, with over 200+ varieties of wild mushrooms that are locally collected and identified for you. Those who have attended our festival in the past are always in awe of the sheer number and diversity of wild mushrooms our team gathers for this display. We will also have a select group of vendors selling all things mushroomy\, along with some local food trucks and beverages to keep you happy! \nIf you want to hear a lecture from one of our visiting experts or join a mushroom identification hike\, tickets for those activities will go on sale Tuesday\, Sept. 3rd (the day after Labor Day) at www.wildriversmushroomfestival.com. The cost for each lecture is $20.00\, and hikes will be $10.00. Tickets should also be available at the door each day during the festival\, provided they’re not already sold out! (Seating is limited\, so it makes sense to buy your tickets in advance.) \nMake your plans now to attend the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival\, Saturday and Sunday\, November 9-10\, 2024\, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day. For more information\, please email wildriversmushroomfestival@gmail.com\, or call 541-661-1385. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Pacific Northwest NAMA Camp
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with: \n\nSouth Sound Mushroom Club (SSMC)\nSouthwest Washington Mycological Society (SWMS)\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2024 NAMA Annual Foray\, will be held at Cispus Learning Center located in Randle\, Washington\, deep within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest\, nestled among three stunningly picturesque (and active!) volcanoes (Mt. St. Helens\, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams)! Rich volcanic soil is full of life\, especially fungi! Washington was the first state to declare an official state soil\, called “Tokul.” This magical substrate fosters the growth of towering Douglas-firs\, Western Hemlock (the official Washington state tree) and other conifers\, which is why Washington is known as “The Evergreen State.” These conifers host some incredible mushrooms\, including the much-sought matsutake (Tricholoma murrillianum). \nCheck out our sweet host venue at https://cispus.org/. This woodland facility offers a rustic\, communal camp atmosphere. Foray ticket packages will include camp bunkhouse\, RV spots and tent-camping options\, as well as discounted rates at charming local hotels. \nOur event kicks off on Halloween\, so be prepared to embrace the costumery and seasonal fun! We plan for NAMA’s dynamic Culinary Arts Committee to supplement our foray fare with adventures for your palate\, in addition to a stellar roster of featured presenters who will share cutting-edge mycoscience and hands-on workshops to send you home with new knowledge and skills to amaze your friends. \n\nMore info: https://namyco.org/annual-foray/\nRegistration: https://app.glueup.com/event/pacific-northwest-nama-camp-113420/

SUMMARY:Puget Sound Mycological Society – General Membership Meeting (open to the public)
DESCRIPTION:MEMBERSHIP MEETING Joseph Zapotosky \nHave you ever wondered\,” How do I make a collection that could be used for further research (DNA sequencing/herbarium vouchered collections?” or “What information should I include when asking another myco-enthusiast an identification ques-tion?”\nIf so\, please join us at our next general meeting when Matthew Koons (current recipient of a Ben Woo scholarship grant) will help answer some of these questions—and more. His talk is entitled “Community Science in Mycology: Vouchering\, Ob-servations\, and Genetic Sequencing.” The talk will be centered around documenting biodiversity on the iNaturalist platform and includes how to make high quality observations\, photog-raphy techniques\, vouchering fungal collections\, and how to select specimens for genetic barcoding. It will also touch on recent genetic discoveries in the region\, sequencing technolo-gies\, and how to have your own discoveries barcoded and how you can contribute to community science.\nMatthew Koons is an amateur mycologist who is an active field surveyor and fungal genetic researcher out of a home lab in Se-attle\, Washington (supported in part by a PSMS Ben Woo scholarship grant). While primarily focused on fungi\, he is also interested in broader biodiversity—particularly native plants\, arthropods\, and intertidal organisms.\nWe hope you will join us for this meeting\, as it is closely fol-lowed by our annual Wild Mushroom Exhibit October 19–20\, and details of how you might participate in that exciting show will be discussed.\nThe membership meeting on October 8\, 2024\, will be a “hy-brid” meeting both in-person at the Center for Urban Horticul-ture and virtual on Zoom. We will start letting people into the CUH meeting hall at about 7:00 pm and into the Zoom meet-ing at about 7:15. The lecture will begin at approximately 7:30 pm…\nPrograming note: Dr. Britt Bunyard will be the speaker next at next months meeting.

SUMMARY:Northwoods Foray\, Cable WI
DESCRIPTION:Mushroom season in the Upper Midwest is once again looking prime\, and no place has higher diversity than the Northwoods. You want to see rare and beautiful species? This is the place to be this September. \nWe’ll be foraying in the National Forest among big\, BIG trees. To put it mildly. \nThe forests in Bayfield County have tremendous diversity of plants and mushrooms. Some of the largest amounts of fungi have been historically collected at this event in years past\, with some years bringing in upwards of 400 unique specimens. There is very good reason that this foray has been host to the North American Mycological Association annual foray in 2017\, and again the regional NAMA foray in 2022. \nThe Laurentian Mixed Forest\, also known as the Northwoods\, is a transition zone between the true boreal forest to the north and Big Woods to the south\, with characteristics of each. Our foray regions may includes areas of broadleaf and conifer forest cover\, as well as dry sandy barrens\, conifer bogs\, and swamps. \nThe Northwoods are said to have a distinct smell\, which is attributed partially to the presence of sweet fern.
