SUMMARY:MMS Webinar: Paul Kroeger: Darwin's Elves\, Poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings.
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Manitoba Mushroom Society in collaboration with NAMA. \nFebruary 16\, 7:00 PM central time to 9:00 PM. \nWebinar Description: “Darwin’s Elves”: Poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings\nAn introduction to poisonous mushrooms and their effects is important for all those who are interested in mushrooms as a hobby. Major toxin types and their effects are described\, and a few case studies show how suspect fungi are identified. This presentation offers practical general guidelines for safely handling and preparing edible fungi\, and avoiding becoming another poisoning victim. Some surprising common causes of ‘mushroom poisoning’ are also discussed. \nPaul Kroeger\, a brief biography\nPaul Kroeger has studied mushrooms for over fifty years and is a founding member of the Vancouver Mycological Society (VMS). Paul served as President of VMS for a few years\, and is currently President of The Pacific Northwest Key Council. He is a major contributor to the mycological herbarium collections in the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC and also contributed significant collections to DAOM Herbarium in Ottawa and DAVFP Herbarium in Victoria. He is a regular consultant for the British Columbia Drug and Poison Information Centre\, and various other agencies concerned with mushroom poisonings and fungi in human and animal health. He coauthored\, with Bryce Kendrick\, Oluna Ceska and Christine Roberts\, The Outer Spores: Mushrooms of Haida Gwaii published in 2012 based on a five-year study. \nThis workshop is free for Manitoba Mushroom Society members and Manitoba post-secondary students. Members of other NAMA affiliated mycological associations may attend\, please indicate the name of the association you belong to at the end of the registration form. \n$10 Cdn for non-members. \nRegistration deadline is February 14 midnight central time. The webinar link will be emailed to you on February 15. \nRegister using this form: https://forms.gle/HAcnuXKDZY9f1AgYA

SUMMARY:SOMA General Meeting and Lecture by Alison Pollack
DESCRIPTION:Sonoma County Mycological Assocaition’s general meeting will feature Alison Pollack lecture\, “From Macro to Micro – The Art of Mushroom & Myxo Photography”. \nAlison’s favorite photography subjects are tiny fungi and Myxomycetes (“Myxos” or “Slime Molds”)\, most so small that you would not see them as you walk through the forest. Alison will describe her evolution and process for creating beautiful photos of mushrooms and Myxos\, most barely a few millimeters tall. She will share her techniques for field work as well as studio photography using extreme macro lenses and microscope objectives adapted to her camera. And\, of course\, she will share some of her favorite photographs from local and distant regions. She will discuss all of the gear she uses as well as some of her methods for shooting and post-processing.  She will also discuss how to identify myxos using microscopy. \nAlison Pollack is a macro and extreme macro photographer specializing in Myxomycetes (slime molds) and tiny fungi. Her passion is finding and photographing these beautiful organisms\, especially the smaller ones\, to bring awareness to the spectacular beauty that exists right at our feet as we walk through the forest. Her goal is to reveal these miniature beauties of the forest in a format that is as much art as science. Alison shares her photographs online where she has amassed a large and enthusiastic following from around the world. Her otherworldly images are captioned with information about her subjects\, as well as technical details of her photography process. Alison’s photographs have been featured in dozens of print and online publications\, including National Geographic\, the Sunday New York Times\, Der Spiegel and Science Weekly.  She has been a top winner many times in the the prestigious Nikon Small World photography competition and is one of the Nikon Masters of Microscopy.

SUMMARY:NAMA Yoop Annual Foray
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to descend upon Michigan’s lushly mushroomy Upper Peninsula for our 66th Annual Foray! Join hundreds of your fellow mycophiles in a land where locals proudly declare themselves “Yoopers\,” amid thick forests during the prime foraying season. \nThe event will be held at the Northern Michigan University Event Center in Marquette\, which has a large ballroom\, several classrooms\, and easy parking. But\, what it does NOT include is housing. \nSo\, the foray planning team recommends that if you’re thinking of going\, you should book your accommodations right away for Thursday Aug 27 to Sunday Aug 30\, 2026\, at whatever hotel\, or AirBNB\, or campgrounds suits you. There are many to choose from. Reserving now gives you plenty of choices\, but if you wait until later\, there will be less availability. Also consider ride-sharing\, especially if you’re a member of any of the Host Clubs that are assisting NAMA with logistics and volunteers. \nAlso\, you may want to arrive a day early to visit the local forests. The Foray team will distribute maps and recommended self-guided fungi collecting locations for attendees to spend time in the forests before the event begins. This will replace our previous “early bird” forays. We plan to have tables with voucher collection slips at all the recommended self-guided locations\, starting Wednesday Aug 26\, 2026 (the day before the event begins). \nTickets will go on sale in March 2026 for the NAMA Yoop foray. We’ll have the schedule finalized by then\, as well as volunteer opportunities. Please bring your UV lights because we’ll be doing evening walks on the shore of Lake Superior for Yooperlites\, which are UV-reflective stones. They are fairly easy to find\, and unique to the area. A fun keepsake to take home with you! \nWe cannot wait to see you UP there!

SUMMARY:COMA's 46th Clark Rogerson Foray
DESCRIPTION:Registration for COMA’s 46th Clark Rogerson Foray (9/4/26 to 9/7/26) is now OPEN. \nThe comfortable overnight accommodations at this location – Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp\, Copake\, NY – are similar to those of a motel\, and all guest rooms have their own private bathroom & shower. The home-cooked meals (the camp can accommodate most special diets)\, and all-day access to the heated pool make this facility unique. There will be a limited number of single-person rooms available\, and these will be assigned on a “first come\, first served” basis. (Please see the registration link for details.) There will also be a few rooms that can sleep 3 or even 4 people in “family-style” lodging. (We are pleased to pass along a discount that the camp offers for children 12 and under.) Please let us know if you are interested in family rooms and/or the children’s rates. (twightcoma@gmail.com) We will have an outstanding roster of invited mycologists and expert identifiers on hand\, and foraging on the 460-acre premises and the surround parks is reliably excellent. \nThere will be scheduled outings to designated parks on Saturday & Sunday\, and the event features both afternoon and evening programs or workshops\, with “social hours” (snacks\, drinks\, music) starting at 9 PM each night. You may register for the “full” foray\, 3 days\, 2 days\, or even a single day. The Clark Rogerson Foray is well known throughout the region\, not only as a great learning experience\, but it’s also such wonderful fun that we’ve been doing it for the past 46 years! This event has often filled up quickly\, so we strongly advise reserving a spot ASAP. (Need more information? Go to https://www.comafungi.org/clark-rogerson-foray/) \nQuestions? Please email the foray Registrar\, Terry Wight: twightcoma@gmail.com
