SUMMARY:Northwoods Foray\, Cable WI
DESCRIPTION:Mushroom season in the Upper Midwest is once again looking prime\, and no place has higher diversity than the Northwoods. You want to see rare and beautiful species? This is the place to be this September. \nWe’ll be foraying in the National Forest among big\, BIG trees. To put it mildly. \nThe forests in Bayfield County have tremendous diversity of plants and mushrooms. Some of the largest amounts of fungi have been historically collected at this event in years past\, with some years bringing in upwards of 400 unique specimens. There is very good reason that this foray has been host to the North American Mycological Association annual foray in 2017\, and again the regional NAMA foray in 2022. \nThe Laurentian Mixed Forest\, also known as the Northwoods\, is a transition zone between the true boreal forest to the north and Big Woods to the south\, with characteristics of each. Our foray regions may includes areas of broadleaf and conifer forest cover\, as well as dry sandy barrens\, conifer bogs\, and swamps. \nThe Northwoods are said to have a distinct smell\, which is attributed partially to the presence of sweet fern. Lake Namakagon provides a beautiful backdrop to our host site. The cry of the loon is unforgettable to first-timers to the area. \nThis year we will have planned workshops as well as forays for Friday and Saturday\, and will feature two presentations\, one Friday evening and another on Saturday evening. \nNote: Food and lodging are not included in the event cost. This means you will need to make your own reservations to camp or stay in a hotel or other venue in the area. \nTicket prices for Northwoods Foray 2024 \nAdults (18+)\n– Whole Event\, Thurs to Sunday – $150.00\n– Friday day pass – $80.00\n– Saturday day pass – $80.00 \nChildren ages 12 to 17\nChildren ages 12 to 17 still need to be attending with at least 1 adult who will act as a guardian\, and still need to be registered separately in the form below.\n– Whole Event\, Thurs to Sunday – $50.00\n– Friday day pass – $30.00\n– Saturday day pass – $30.00 \nChildren ages 11 and under\nAll whole-event tickets and day passes for children ages 11 and under are free to this event\, but you still need to register each child and sign up at least 1 adult who will act as a guardian for them. Fill out the form below per child of any age and it will “charge” $0 to submit. This will help us keep track of numbers and will help you at check-in. \nGet Tickets >

SUMMARY:PSMS Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The membership meeting on September 10\, 2024\, will be a “hybrid” meeting both in-person at the Center for Urban Horticulture  and virtual on Zoom. We will start letting people into the CUH meeting hall at about 7:00 pm and into the Zoom meeting at about  7:15. The lecture will begin at approximately 7:30 pm.   \nOur speaker is Noah Siegel\, and his talk is titled “Cascadia—a Fungal Paradise.”  The wet mossy forests of the Pacific Northwest host a spectacular diversity of mushrooms\, a true fungal paradise!  This talk will highlight this diversity\, the unique habitats\, and it’s plethora of mushrooms.  \nHe will also be giving a preview of his latest project co-authored with Christian Schwarz— Mushrooms of Cascadia\, A Comprehensive Guide to Fungi of the Pacific Northwest—written specifically for our region. Just released and hot off the presses\, it is just in time for what we all are hoping will be a memorable season. Noah will have copies available to those in attendance so\, plan on coming in person.  \nNoah is one of North America’s foremost field mycologists. He has spent over three decades seeking\,  photographing\, identifying\, and furthering his knowledge about all  aspects of macrofungi. He travels and lectures extensively across  America\, following the mushrooms from coast to coast. Noah was  the recipient of the 2022 North American Mycological Association’s Award for Contributions to Amateur Mycology. His primary  research interest is on the taxonomy and systematics of fungi.   \nIn addition to Mushrooms of Cascadia\, he has authored\, along  with Christian Schwarz\, Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast\, a  Comprehensive Guide to the Fungi of Coastal Northern California and A field Guide to the Rare Fungi of California’s National  Forests. He is currently working on Mushrooms of Alaska\, with  Steve Trudell and Kate Mohatt.

SUMMARY:COMA's 44th Clark Rogerson Foray
DESCRIPTION:Registration for COMA’s 44th Clark Rogerson Foray (9/27/24 to 9/30 24) is now OPEN. \nWhether you’re a seasoned veteran or just starting out\, this foray is suitable for those of any skill level\, from beginner to advanced. We will have an outstanding roster of invited mycologists and expert identifiers on hand\, and foraging on the 460-acre premises and surrounding parks is always excellent. (We normally collect and identify close to 400 species.) Overnight accommodations at the 2024 location (Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp\, Copake\, NY) are similar to those of a motel; all guest rooms have their own private bathroom & shower\, and the home-cooked meals (the camp can accommodate most special diets) and all-day access to the heated pool make this facility unique. \nOn Saturday & Sunday there will be scheduled outings to designated parks\, and the event features both afternoon and evening programs or workshops\, with “social hours” (snacks\, drinks\, music) starting at 9 PM each night. You may register for the “full” foray\, 3 days\, 2 days\, or even a single day. \nThere will be a limited number of single-person rooms available\, and these will be assigned on a “first come\, first served” basis. (Please see the registration link for details.) There are also several options for sleeping 3 or even 4 people in “family” rooms\, and we are pleased to pass along a 50% discount that the camp offers for children 12 and under. Please let us know if you are interested in the family rooms and/or the children’s discounted rates. (Questions? JLBCO@hotmail.com) \nFor the past several years\, this event has filled up quickly\, so we strongly advise reserving a spot ASAP. Go to https://www.comafungi.org/clark-rogerson-foray/ (Registration deadline: Monday\, September 9th.)
